A Historic Milestone for Montenegrin Wrestling at the Balkan Championships: Dževat Finishes Fifth in Koprivnica
Dževat, representing the Montenegrin national team, secured fifth place in the junior 125 kg freestyle category at the Balkan Championships in Olympic wrestling, held in Koprivnica, Croatia. This result marks a significant milestone for Montenegrin wrestling and provides an important boost for the further development of the sport in our country.

Koprivnica hosted the Balkan Wrestling Championships from 28 September to 5 October, featuring the U15, U17 and U20 age categories. The competition included freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling and women’s wrestling. At this international event, which brought together athletes from Balkan countries and the wider region, Montenegro was represented in the junior category.
Dževat, a member of Wrestling Club Perjanik, represented Montenegro and achieved a notable result in the 125 kg freestyle category, finishing the competition in fifth place.
Competing at the championships against strong international opposition was a valuable experience for the young Montenegrin wrestler. Facing athletes from countries with a strong wrestling tradition, including Türkiye, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece, provided an opportunity to gain valuable international experience and further assess the abilities and potential of Montenegrin wrestlers.
This achievement is particularly significant as it marks the first appearance of a Montenegrin representative at the Balkan Championships in Olympic wrestling since the re-establishment of the Wrestling Federation. Dževat’s top-five finish in his weight category therefore represents an important milestone and provides further encouragement for the continued development and promotion of wrestling in Montenegro.
Dževat was accompanied in Koprivnica by his club coach, Vladan Baković, whose work and support play an important role in the development of the young athlete. The Montenegrin delegation was also accompanied by Boris Bošković, President of the Wrestling Federation of Montenegro, while Dževat’s clubmate, Petar Vujičić, provided enthusiastic support from the stands.
The Wrestling Federation of Montenegro congratulates Dževat on his result, fighting spirit and достойful representation of his country on the international stage. The Federation also commends Wrestling Club Perjanik and coach Vladan Baković for their work and contribution to the development of young wrestlers.
Fifth place at the Balkan Championships provides a solid foundation for future challenges and motivation to continue working hard. With quality training, competitive experience, and the support of his club and the Federation, young Montenegrin wrestlers have significant opportunities for further progress and the achievement of even better results.
We congratulate Dževat on his successful performance and hope this marks the beginning of many more outstanding achievements and future medals for Montenegrin wrestling!
